Popularity & Recovery

“My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.”
Adlai Stevenson

In today’s world, the obsession with popularity has reached unprecedented levels. Social media, peer pressure, and societal expectations have amplified the need for approval, making people go to great lengths to be liked and accepted. But at what cost?

This relentless pursuit of popularity is often linked to deeper issues of self-worth. Individuals struggling with Eating Distress or Eating Disorders, for instance, frequently feel an intense need for validation from others. However, this is not just limited to them, many of us spend so much time seeking approval that we forget the most important thing: learning to like ourselves for who we truly are.

The reality is, no matter how hard we try, it is impossible to be liked by everyone. There will always be someone who disapproves of us, but that does not mean there is something wrong with us. More often than not, their dislike reflects their own personal biases or struggles rather than our actual worth.

If we take a step back and assess things objectively, we would realize that most of the people who truly know us do enjoy our company, often more than we enjoy our own. Unfortunately, we tend to fixate on the few instances of criticism or rejection, giving them far more weight than they deserve. Imagine if we redirected that same energy toward embracing and internalizing the positive words and encouragement we receive. How much more confident and loved would we feel?

Today, make a conscious choice to stop wasting energy on worrying about whether people like you. Instead, invest in the relationships and voices that uplift and appreciate you. The opinions of those who fail to see your worth are simply not worth your time.

Affirmation: I am worthy, I am enough, and I deserve to be loved just as I am.
