Loneliness
“Loneliness is the poverty of self, solitude is the richness of self.”
May Sarton
At some point in life, all of us, if we are honest with ourselves, have felt the sting of loneliness. It’s a deeply human experience, shaped not just by circumstance, but by the way we connect with ourselves and the world around us.
Modern life, with all its speed and distraction, often amplifies these feelings. Unlike in centuries past, our fast-paced, hyper-connected world can paradoxically leave us feeling more isolated. We often assume that loneliness stems from being physically alone, but the truth is more complex. It’s entirely possible to feel lonely even in a crowded room or surrounded by friends. This kind of loneliness can feel even more profound, it’s not the absence of people, but the absence of connection. It’s a disconnect from ourselves that no amount of external company can fix.
To truly enjoy the presence of others, we first need to be comfortable with ourselves. We need to recognize that everyone, in some way, seeks companionship, and that the ability to connect begins within. Often, the most difficult but important step is reaching out. Healing, especially emotional and spiritual healing, does not thrive in isolation. It blossoms in connection, in sharing, and in openness.
When loneliness creeps in, practice to remember that there are people who care, who understand, and who would want to be there for you. Let yourself imagine being with them, feel what that warmth and acceptance might be like. Begin to nurture interaction, even in small ways. Open yourself to the idea of connection, not just in physical presence but in meaningful conversation and emotional honesty.
Being alone doesn’t have to mean being lonely. Solitude can be a choice, a moment of peace and self-discovery, especially when we know that we are not truly isolated. There are people out there who would listen, who would understand, who have felt what you’re feeling. You are never truly alone when you carry that kind of support in your heart.
Affirmation:
