Freeing Yourself from the Weight of Worry

By July 28, 2025August 5th, 2025No Comments

“In trouble to be troubled is to have your trouble doubled.”
Daniel Defoe

Worry is like a shadow, small in reality, but capable of growing larger than life. An old Swedish proverb reminds us, “Worry gives a small thing a big shadow.” But what exactly is worry?

At its core, worry is a natural response to uncertainty, an attempt by our minds to prepare for possible dangers. It’s a survival mechanism, much like our body’s ability to sense pain, it alerts us to potential threats. But just as too much pain can be debilitating, excessive worry can overwhelm us, leaving us drained, anxious, and stuck in a cycle of fear.

The Reality of Worry

Many people in recovery from eating distress/eating disorder are trapped in the habit of overthinking, fussing over things they cannot control, replaying past mistakes, or fearing an uncertain future.

Worry, like blood pressure, is necessary in small amounts. A little concern keeps us alert and prepared. But too much? It can consume us, robbing us of joy, health, and peace of mind.

Now, ask yourself: What would your life be like if you worried less?

Would you have more energy? Would you be more present, more attuned to the people and moments that truly matter? Would you laugh more, love more, and live more fully? The answer is a resounding yes.

The Illusion of Control

Many of us worry because we believe that by thinking about a problem constantly, we are somehow controlling it. But the truth is, worry does not change the outcome. Whether you worry or not, the sun will still rise, and the moon will still shine. The world will continue to turn, indifferent to the anxieties that keep you up at night.

Let’s face it, most of what we worry about either:

Never happens (our minds exaggerate threats).

Already happened (and no amount of worry can change the past).

Is out of our control (yet we exhaust ourselves trying to control the uncontrollable).

So why give so much power to worry? Why allow it to steal your time, your health, your happiness?

Breaking Free from Worry

Letting go of worry doesn’t mean ignoring real problems. It means addressing what you can control and releasing what you cannot. Here are some ways to start:

  • Shift Perspective: Ask yourself, “Will this matter in a week? A month? A year?” Most worries fade over time.
  • Take Action : If something is within your control, do what you can. If it’s not, let it go.
  • Stay in the present moment. Most worries are about the past or future, neither of which exist right now.
  • Reframe Negative Thoughts: Instead of thinking, “What if something goes wrong?” ask, “What if everything works out?”
  • Breathe & Release: Breathing, relaxing, or journaling can help process anxious thoughts instead of dwelling on them.

The Gift of a Worry-Free Day

At the beginning and end of each day, worry solves nothing. It does not change outcomes, it doesn’t help you to recover, but it does steal your peace. It leaves frown lines on your face and drains the energy you could use to create, love, and experience life fully.

So today, choose to let go. Release the weight of unnecessary worry. Replace it with trust, joy, and presence.

Let’s practice having Worry Detox Day!

Affirmation: Today, I choose to give myself the gift of a worry-free day. I release what I cannot control and embrace the beauty of the present moment.
