Self-Help Tip of the Week: Control

“Nature, with equal mind,
Sees all her sons at play,
Sees man control the wind,
The wind sweep man away.”
- Arnold Matthew

Loss of control is considered as failure and greatly feared going through an eating distress. We do not like to hear that the main purpose behind our condition is control, but this statement is not far from the truth. We feel so much out of control most of the time that we try to control everything, especially the most uncontrollable things such as our bodies, our food intake, our relationships or other people. We have this fear that the minute the slightest control is lost, all control will disappear and we will indulge ourselves. Guilt is our reminder that indulgence is not allowed during an eating disorder, we see this as ‘giving in’.

Today, be honest with yourself. Look at yourself through magnified glass and list all the things you are trying to control.

Then ask yourself these questions:

  • What does control give to you?
  • Are you controlling your condition or is your condition controlling you?
  • When you give up control you will feel you are in control of your life!

Today I will forget about controlling life and start living life!
