Self-Help Tip of the Week: Body Image

For people with eating distress the body seems like an obstacle to be overcome. We need to learn to explore a new relationship with our bodies. Our preoccupation with our appearance goes much deeper than the outer image. The body is a basic part of who we are, and it affects the choices and psychological issues we pursue.

Our body is a structure of 100 million individual cells. Cells, like individual people, have differences as well as similarities. They live together in ‘families’ and work in groups towards the well-being of the whole person. Our body is our gift. It is a beautiful element of Nature which makes us Natural Beings. The more we listen to our bodies, the more we feel peace and health within our bodies. We need to get in touch with our bodies, at our own pace, starting slowly.

Positive body image, or positive relationship with our body, is not creating a perfect body; it is learning to live happily in one which feels good and works well. The way we see ourselves depends on how we think we are seen by others. Our body can be loyal friend or strong enemy. Nothing happens without a commitment and regular practice. What we relate to out there reflects what we are like inside.

We need to reach harmony between body appearance and body experience.

Body image is the perception we have of our body. People with eating distress often have a distorted body image and perceive them to be different than they are. When we change our weight but don’t change our thoughts about our body, we have a distorted body image. We must learn to know and accept our body.

What can we do?

  • Set aside time to engage in physical activity with the focus on experiencing pleasurable sensation while moving
  • Look at photos of admirable people whose bodies are not in the cultural idealised image, focus on qualities you admire in them
  • Pay attention to at least one body sensation that you experience each day
  • Examine your thoughts about cultural stereotypes and challenge and resist these media messages you receive on a daily basis
  • Be aware of cloth you wear

Reclaim your body and reclaim yourself
