Positive and Negative Influences

“I love you not for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you.” ~Roy Croft

From the day we were born, our environment has had a strong influence on us. We don’t always pay enough attention to this fact and we’re not always properly aware of it either. When we are put in close contact with other people, flecks of their character, behaviour and values cross over and embed themselves in us.

This crossover can be good for us or it can have very negative consequences on our feelings about ourselves.
What influences have people around you had on your feelings?

Is it a positive or negative one?

Are you surrounded with people who constantly complain even if they have nothing to complain about?
Do you choose to be with optimistic people who embrace your mood for the better?

Take a sheet of paper and divide it in two halves.
On one side write a list of the people who have a negative influence on your self-esteem and the way you feel about yourself. On the other side list all the other people you are with or the ones you meet occasionally who contribute to your well being.

With whom do you prefer to be with?

In recovery you need to make more choices about the people you are associated with. You cannot always avoid all the negative people around you, but you can definitely make sure that you spend more time in the company of the ones who are positive.
